the eyewriter

March 21, 2010

Los Angeles based graffiti writer Tony Quan was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2003. a group of techies led by Zach Lieberman set out to create a way for Quan to continue with his passion of graffiti even though he was virtually completely paralyzed. they created the “eyewriter” which monitors eye movement and translates it to writing/drawing.

“Then we assembled a kind of wire frame that holds a Web cam, a small camera that we’ve mounted close to the eye,” he explains. “We’ve written software that tracks the eye, and then we calibrate with [Quan’s] eye movements and the computer screen.”
